“An Iron Ring,” Alessandro Valeri

MAXXI – Museum of 21st Century Arts, Rome
16.01 – 26.01.2020

At the beginning of 2020, the MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts hosted “An Iron Ring,” a project by Alessandro Valeri curated by Fiorella Bassan and Giorgia Calò. This event concluded an artistic and personal research journey that began in 2011 when Valeri visited the orphanage in Zippori near Nazareth. The orphanage, run by Catholic nuns with Jewish, Muslim, and Christian volunteers, was a symbol of interfaith tolerance that profoundly impacted the artist.

The project generated other artistic experiences, culminating in “An Iron Ring,” a physical/mental workshop for children and adults in the Carlo Scarpa Hall at the MAXXI. The exhibition was structured in four segments, interconnected by narrative threads that illustrated Valeri’s artistic journey.

The event was promoted by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Israel in Italy and the Italy-Israel Foundation for Culture and the Arts.
